OKC hosts Arabian Youth Nationals

This week the Arabian Youth Nationals are taking place at State Fair Park.

This is one of the many national and international equine championship events held in Oklahoma City. The Arabian Youth Nationals hold a special interest for me because my daughter and I share a passion for Arabian horses. When she was younger, I would take my daughter annually to participate in the Arabian Youth Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Now that the event is being held in Oklahoma City, we have the opportunity to show off our city to our fellow horse lovers. As an economic developer, nothing makes me happier than seeing a new, revenue-generating event bringing people to our city, filling hotel rooms and restaurants.

A 2014 study of the economic impact of the Oklahoma equine industry found horse shows and competitions contribute more than $270 million to the economy statewide. Since Oklahoma City is home to more national and international equine championship events than any other city in the world, the majority of that, $188 million, is spent right here. As our city continues to add more destination features, such as Riversport Adventures and Scissortail Park, we can encourage the visitors to stay longer and explore beyond their competition event.
