Downtown growing pains

We have several significant development projects being constructed downtown that are causing disruption – a change in venue, routes or routine – but as we have seen with past projects, the transformation is worth the temporary inconveniences.

The most visible disruption right now is with the construction of the rail line for the new Oklahoma City streetcar system. The 4.6-mile modern streetcar system will have 22 stops linking major employers, businesses, attractions, residents and visitors in the downtown area.

This is a complicated construction project, but many portions of the route are nearing completion. Soon you will see the streetcar vehicles being tested along the route.

Embark has begun sharing safety tips for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians on its website in preparation for the December launch of service. If you were one of the many people searching for parking downtown this past weekend, you will appreciate the park-and-ride convenience of the streetcar service.

People trying to get around aren’t the only group affected by the streetcar construction. Businesses along the construction route are also impacted as it is difficult to drive, walk or park in order to reach the businesses during certain phases of the construction project. Please make an extra effort during this time to continue visiting the stores and restaurants. Our continued patronage is important to the long-term success and vibrancy of the businesses and districts along the streetcar route.
