Shopping, giving locally keep community strong

This Saturday is Small Business Saturday, a designated shopping day to support small businesses. Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the day reminds us that as we kick off our holiday shopping, local businesses have an important impact on our community and economy.

Local businesses are owned by people who are part of the community – their families live, work and play here. Oklahoma City is fortunate to have a vital mix of small businesses that provide jobs to so many of our residents and contribute unique experiences and flavors to our community. We are rewarded for our high patronage of small businesses since more of the dollars spent at local businesses stay in the community.

An excellent opportunity for supporting local businesses is the Holiday Pop-Up Shops in Midtown at NW 10th Street and N. Hudson Avenue. The Holiday Pop-Up Shops were created in 2012 with the goal to bring local shopping to one central hub and make it easier for OKC residents and visitors to shop local during the holiday season. The hope is that customers will discover new shops during the pop-ups and support those shops at their brick-and-mortar locations the rest of the year. The Holiday Pop-Up Shops are open every Thursday through Sunday from Nov. 29 through Dec. 22 and feature local retailers and artisans who offer shoppers unique and one-of a-kind gifts with shops rotating weekly.
