maps 3 milestones

Oklahoma City has watched with anticipation this week as the MAPS 3 whitewater rafting and kayaking facility filled with water.

Riversport Rapids will hold its grand opening ceremony the weekend of May 7-8. The opening will include U.S. Olympic trials, live music and fireworks. The facility was designed to serve people of all ages and abilities, from beginner to experienced rafters. Viewing areas also allow spectators to watch the action free of charge. A restaurant will have views of the channels as well.

The MAPS 3 streetcar project made important progress last week, as the City Council approved a contract with Brookville Equipment Corp. to build five vehicles for the streetcar system. The system will serve Midtown, Bricktown and downtown Oklahoma City as well as the future MAPS 3 park and convention center.

MAPS 3 senior wellness centers are in various stages of progress in different parts of the city. The first center, near Hefner and Rockwell in northwest Oklahoma City, is well into construction. The second center will be under construction soon near Capitol Hill High School in southwest Oklahoma City, and the city is seeking an operating partner for the third center, which will be in northeast Oklahoma City.
