Redevelopment opportunities in NE OKC

Several public and private redevelopment projects are underway in northeast Oklahoma City that offer economic revitalization and increase the health and well-being of the residents in this area of the city.

The Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority’s recent announcement of several parcels of land available for redevelopment will further ignite growth and reinvestment in the area. The sites are generally located along and adjacent to the NE 23rd Street commercial corridor. Some of the sites are within the Northeast Renaissance Urban Renewal Area and may potentially qualify for tax increment financing assistance.

One available site is the former Marcus Garvey school at NE 24th Street and N. Jordan Avenue. It is offered for adaptive reuse, preferably mixed-use or commercial redevelopment. We have recently seen how a former school can creatively and successfully be redeveloped. Once an abandoned high school, The Douglass apartments at Page Woodson were renovated into high-quality, affordable housing. Part of the success of The Douglass is that the development honored the school’s historical significance and the developer engaged the community throughout the process. We would anticipate the same level of engagement from the Marcus Garvey redevelopment.
