August marks the beginning of the school year in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma City Public Schools started at the beginning of the month, while other schools in the area are still welcoming students to their first day of school. One of the annual back-to-school rites is completing the school supply list. For students, it’s often pencils, paper, crayons and maybe even a new backpack or lunchbox. For teachers, the list is much longer and more expensive, and includes classroom tools, supplies and equipment for learning experiences to support a great education.
To assist teachers in getting the supplies and materials they need, the Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools has formed a successful partnership with DonorsChoose.org, an online crowdfunding program that allows individuals to donate directly to classroom projects requested by teachers. Once funding is achieved, requested materials are shipped directly to the teachers.
Since the Foundation for OKCPS launched its partnership with DonorsChoose.org in 2014, more than 5,000 projects at 86 Oklahoma City schools have been funded, ranging from butterfly cocoons and robotics kits, to books, health and sports projects, musical instruments and specially equipped chairs.
